Statement From Chancellor Lester W. Young Jr. and the New York State Board of Regents

Commissioner Betty A. Rosa maintains the complete and unanimous support of the New York State Board of Regents to continue her invaluable work on behalf of all of New York’s students. With decades of exceptional leadership at the school, district, and statewide levels, Dr. Rosa possesses a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by New York’s children, families, teachers, and school and district leaders. Time and again, she has demonstrated her distinct talent to guide and support them through these challenges with her thoughtful and compassionate leadership.

The Board of Regents adhered to all required procedures, protocols, and notifications in adopting the recent pay increase for Commissioner Rosa – an increase that reflects both the magnitude of the challenges that New York’s school communities encounter and the Board’s continued confidence in Dr. Rosa’s ability to address these challenges effectively.

Today, many are questioning the very meaning of fairness and justice. In this moral moment, it is imperative to recognize that female leaders, particularly those of color, have historically been subjected to lower compensation rates compared with their peers. It is disheartening to witness the persistence of these unfair standards.
